Just received yours of May 1 and was gladto hear from you as usual or even more than usual.
Yes! I’ve read a condensation of Curie’s ‘a journey among warriors’. I liked Evevery much but he didn’t stay around long enough to hear all of my stories. Sheseemed to be --- a bit frightened or perhaps subdued by the things I told herin one hour, I am thankful that I have no tendency to become over excited orfrightened by realities -- of war or peace.
I do receive some of your letters, atleast, and an occasional one from you— anyway, if you write to me, it gives yousomething to occupy your thoughts (and fingers) - you available. Your lettersalso give me a nice little lift, of a higher order, even than a good cocktail.
Peggy, if you are not too busy, I wonder ifyou could and would do a little shopping for me. The wife of one my civiliantechnicians (Radio) has been isolated in Free China for three years and saysshe needs some clothing and other items badly. Just on the chance that you havethe time and inclination, I am inclosing a list of the things she needs mosturgently. If it is inconvenient, don’t bother. If you do buy the things, havethem packed securely in a substantial box or case such as you used to sendthings to me –and address as follows:

我刚刚看了你五月一日的来信，非常开心，每次听到你的消息我都很欣慰。
我不久前读完了艾芙·居里的新书《战地之旅》。我很欣赏她，但很遗憾她没能在我这儿多呆些日子，我还有好多战争中的故事可以告诉她。在这里的时候，我觉得她有点紧张，也可能是她对我讲给她的那些故事有点儿吃不消。可说实话，我们只谈了一个小时，她就成这样了。所以我很庆幸我对这里的战事没有那么激动或不安，不然我非得抑郁而终。
你给我寄过很多封信，不管怎样，偶尔能读到你的信，真的可以让我振奋一阵子，起码比鸡尾酒更有效果。写信给我很麻烦吧，花费很多精力和时间，至少会占用你的手指吧! 开个玩笑。
佩吉，你不太忙的时候，我想请你帮我买点儿东西，然后寄过来。我的一位技术员的夫人被隔离在国统区三年了，她迫切地需要些衣服和其它物资。我想到你可能有时间，也会愿意帮助她。我把需要的物品列在一张表上给你，如果你不方便，就不必麻烦了。如果你买到了那些东西，就把它们放在一个大箱子里，裹得严实一些，然后像往常一样寄给我。
