The stars scattered and the moon was clear.I was on the way home without any burden, after all, tomorrow was Saturday.Sniffing the scent of the air, I could distinguish that was the osmanthus fragrance. The road light broke down and I couldn’t see everything clearly. But suddenly, I heard a sound from the corner.
“Hey, young man, come here.” There came afaint voice of an old woman, I could tell.
Wondering what happened, I hesitated to come up but halted at the spot.
“Come here, please, Paul. I have somethingto tell you.” The sound turned up again, weakly.
How could this person know my name? Suspecting the identity of her, I walked up and found that in the corner stood a small old woman.
“I tell you, don’t go out tomorrow. Or something serious will happen.” Said she in a mysterious way.
What? Threaten? Maybe she just wanted to get money from me. Trade money for safety, only idiots would do this.
I turned back and didn’t take it into heart.
However, I had a strange dream the details of which I could not recall clearly. But unfortunately, I got up late in the morning and realized that I would be late for the date with my friend, Kevin. He was the best friend who I played with since I was six. It seemed that he was doomed to lead a miserable life because his parents died young and left him alone. My family liked this little boy and helped him sometimes but we neverconsidered him as an orphan. That may be the reason why we became best friends.
“What the fuck!” I complained about the wrong alarm and dialed Kevin’s number.
“Hello, this is Kevin speaking.”
“ Kevin, I’m Paul. I’m afraid that I willbe late for our date.”
“Never mind. I’m still stuck on the road. You can take your time.”
“Good heavens!”
I hasted to the café. Surprised, I was the first one to come. I ordered a cup of coffee and waited on my seat. Sighing with the feeling that the traffic problem became more and more serious, I didn’t notice the waitress was approaching.
“Your coffee, sir.”
“Thank you.” I was about to reach out my hand to take over my coffee, but I didn’t take well and it poured on my trousers.
“I’m sorry, sir. I will serve you another cup.”
“It’s my fault, I pay for it.”
“Thank you, sir.”
I waited here out-of-mind until 11o’clock.Unexpectedly, Kevin didn’t show up and even didn’t give me a call. I phoned him for three times but no one answered. Using up all my patience, I called for the waiter and paid the bill. Then I left the café with my wallet lying on the table.
On my way home, I was still wondering may be something happened to Kevin. All at once, my mobile phone rang.
“Hello? Who’s that?”
“Hello, is that Mr. Paul?”
“Yes. What’s the matter?”
“This is LA police station. Your friend Kevin suffered a car accident. Please come to LA first hospital if you are free now.”
“Ok, I will go. Thank you, sir.”
“You are welcome.”
Car accident? The same thing happened to this poor son. May he was not badly hurt. Worrying about his situation and praying to god for his safety, I sped up. Even myself could hear the boom of my engine.
Finally, I arrived at the hospital and found his ward.
“His situation is not that bad and he will recover in one month. But I suppose his brain was hit and he must accept further examination.” The doctor said.
“Ok, thank you.” I bowed to the doctor.
“He’s awake now and you can talk to him.”
“Ok, I will”
I stepped into the ward and saw him with some bandages. But I could see clearly that he was in a bad mood.
“I don’t want to see you. Get out!”
“Are you crazy?”
“If you didn’t come up with this date, this would not happen!”
“What? You agreed with me at that time andnow you just blame me!”
“I don’t care, I just know it’s all your fault. Get out; I want to have a rest.
“Ok, ok, I will see you next day.”
“No, I will never see you any more. You arenot my best friend any longer.”
He pressed the nurse bell and the nurseurged me to get out of the ward. I stared at him and turned back angrily.
I drove home sullenly and realized something was strange.
